GI dietitians treat patients with GI disorders. The GI-focused nutrition services will cover evidenced based GI nutrition interventions (e.g. low FODMAP diet for irritable bowel syndrome or 6 food elimination diet for eosinophilic esophagitis.) It is not uncommon for GI patients to demonstrate disordered eating. GI dietitians are typically able to assess the relationship between disordered eating and the patient’s GI conditions and aid the referring physician in developing treatment recommendations. This will often include referral to mental health and dietitian providers with eating disorder expertise.
This checklist provides quick and easy referral considerations to aid in screening a potential patient for nutrition services with a GI dietitian.
